A while back, I was helping my daughter with her algebra homework — a module on the quadratic formula. We were both stuck. Maybe you can relate.

So I did what anyone would do: I opened a popular AI chat tool and asked for help. Right on cue, it gave us a clear, confident answer.

The only problem? We were still stumped. Neither of us could actually apply the concept we'd just read about. The knowledge didn't stick.

Most AI tools are great at spitting out answers. But getting an answer and actually understanding something are very different things.

What I wish I'd found that night.

Around that time, I saw a joint study from Carnegie Mellon and Microsoft — my old employer — with a striking finding: knowledge workers who leaned more heavily on AI scored lower on critical-thinking assessments than their peers, and were less aware of the gap.

When you outsource your thinking to AI, the cognitive muscles you don't exercise get weaker. Put bluntly: overreliance on AI is making people worse at thinking.

That moment with my daughter stuck with me. As someone who'd spent ten years building an e-learning company, it got me thinking: what if we could use AI to make learning more approachable — to build real understanding, rather than deliver passive answers that won't stick?

That became the inspiration for Fenzo.

After starting my career as a developer at Microsoft and then Meta, I founded Educative with my brother Naeem in 2015. We assembled a team of instructional designers, researchers, and educators — many with PhDs — obsessed with one question: what's the most effective way to teach technical skills?

With thousands of courses published and over three million developers on the platform, the answer became clear: active learning beats passive learning, every time.

Software developers know this intuitively. You can't just read about how to code. You have to get hands-on — build, tinker, break things, and fix them. The doing is what produces the knowing.

The cognitive science confirms it: students in active-learning formats are 1.5× more likely to pass than those in passive ones. We watched that play out in our own data for years before we ever looked up the citation.

As AI grows ubiquitous, we've never had easier access to answers. Information is everywhere. The irony is that genuine understanding has never been harder to build.

That's why the skills most valuable in the years ahead are precisely the ones AI is worst at replacing: critical thinking, problem-solving, domain expertise.

Decades of cognitive science point to the same conclusion. Retrieval practice — producing an answer rather than recognizing one — beats re-reading. Spaced repetition compounds that over time. The friction of working for an answer isn't an obstacle to learning. It's the whole point.

Active learning beats passive. Always.

Reading about something and doing it are not the same cognitive experience. No passive reading or watching — every lesson requires genuine engagement through sandboxes, challenges, and quizzes.

You can't learn what you don't finish.

There's a dirty secret in online learning: people don't complete self-directed courses. Not for lack of motivation — the format fails them.
