Practice tests are not just a measure of what you know; they are one of the most reliable ways to learn it. Use the testing effect deliberately and you will remember more a week from now than any amount of rereading can buy you.

What the testing effect actually is

The testing effect, also called retrieval practice or test-enhanced learning, is the finding that recalling information from memory improves long-term retention more than restudying the same material for the same amount of time. A test is not only a measurement of what you know. It is a learning event, and often a more powerful one than the study session that came before it.

The most cited demonstration is Roediger and Karpicke’s 2006 study in Psychological Science. Students read short prose passages, then either restudied a passage or took a free recall test on it, writing down everything they could remember. Tested a few minutes later, the rereaders looked stronger. Tested a week later, the result flipped: students who had practiced recall retained substantially more than students who had spent the equivalent time rereading. Rereading won the short game and lost the one that matters.

This is not a fragile lab curiosity. The effect has replicated across decades of research, in subjects from vocabulary to science texts to medical training, and in formats from flashcards to essay-style recall. A major review of study techniques in Psychological Science in the Public Interest rated practice testing among the highest-utility strategies available to students, and rated rereading and highlighting among the lowest.

Why it feels worse while it works better

Cognitive scientists Robert and Elizabeth Bjork call conditions like this desirable difficulties: study conditions that feel harder and look worse during practice, yet produce stronger long-term learning. Retrieval practice is the canonical example, alongside spacing and interleaving.

The trap is that we judge our own learning by how fluent studying feels in the moment. Rereading feels smooth because the material is sitting right in front of you and everything registers as familiar. Struggling to recall feels like evidence that studying is failing. But in-the-moment fluency is a poor predictor of what you will remember next week. The effort of retrieval is not a side effect of the method; it is the mechanism. Each successful pull from memory strengthens the route you used to get there.

That is why students so often rank rereading above self-testing when asked how they study, and why the ranking is backwards. The method that feels productive and the method that is productive are not the same method.

Recognition is not recall

Rereading trains recognition, the ability to look at material and think “yes, I know this.” Exams demand production: generating the answer with nothing in front of you but the question.

These are different memory skills, and recognition is by far the cheaper one. Highlighted pages and reread chapters feel known because they are familiar, and familiarity is easy to mistake for knowledge. The gap only becomes visible when the book closes, which for many students happens for the first time inside the exam room.

Quick self-check
Close the book and explain the concept out loud or on paper, from nothing. If you can only recognize the answer when you see it, you have not learned it yet.

Even multiple-choice exams, which nominally test recognition, reward retrieval practice. Distractor options are written to look plausible, and the fine-grained memory built by repeatedly producing answers is what lets you tell close options apart.

Spacing and interleaving multiply the effect

Two companion findings make retrieval practice work even harder.

Spacing

Spacing means distributing your retrieval attempts across days rather than massing them into one long session. Partial forgetting between sessions is a feature rather than a bug: the harder a successful retrieval is, the more it strengthens memory. Quizzing yourself on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday beats quizzing yourself three times on Monday, even though the Monday marathon feels more thorough.

Interleaving

Interleaving means mixing topics or problem types within a session instead of doing twenty of one kind in a row. Blocked practice lets you settle into autopilot, executing the same method repeatedly. Interleaved practice forces you to first identify which method the problem calls for, which is exactly the skill exams test.

Both techniques share the signature of the testing effect: they feel worse during practice and deliver more on test day.

A protocol you can run on any exam

The routine is the same whether you are preparing for a certification, a language test, a licensing exam, or a final.

  1. Turn material into questions as you study. Every heading, definition, and worked example can become a prompt, and doing it on the first pass costs almost nothing.
  2. Test before you feel ready. Waiting until you feel prepared means waiting until retrieval is easy, which wastes most of the benefit. Early, effortful, partially failed attempts still strengthen memory.
  3. Retrieve completely, then check. Write or say the full answer from memory before looking anything up, then compare against the source and correct the gaps.
  4. Space and shuffle. Revisit each topic across several sessions on different days, and mix topics within a session. An item you got right today can wait a few days; an item you missed comes back tomorrow.
  5. Simulate the real thing. Do at least some practice under exam conditions: timed, closed-book, in the actual question format.

Treat this as an illustrative routine rather than a rigid formula. The constant is that memory gets pulled on, repeatedly, with gaps in between.

The frustration rule
If a study session feels smooth, you are probably rereading. If it involves effortful recall and the occasional blank, you are probably learning.

The mistakes that blunt it

A few habits reliably drain the effect. Saving practice tests for a final diagnostic, after all the “real” studying is done, treats the most powerful study tool as a thermometer. Peeking at the answer after a two-second attempt converts retrieval back into rereading. Grading yourself generously (“I basically knew that”) protects your confidence and nothing else. And flipping flashcards fast enough that you recognize the back rather than generate it is rereading with extra steps.

Close the loop
Retrieval without feedback lets wrong answers harden, so always check your attempt against the source before moving on.

The fix in every case is the same: make your memory do the work, honestly, before the material reappears.
