A World Cup can feel like too much to hold in your head at once. Matches are spread across many cities, the format switches from groups to knockout, and one late goal can change who qualifies. The simplest way to stay oriented is to treat the tournament like a map with rules. Where are we playing, what stage are we in, and what does a team need right now?
Look over this dashboard of the 16 venues and notice how different matchdays and rounds are distributed across host cities.
Rule of thumb If you know the city and the round, you already know a lot about travel, recovery time, and how a coach might rotate players.
The 2026 World Cup is played in June to July. It includes 48 teams, 16 host cities, and 104 matches. Those numbers are not trivia. They explain why squads matter, why recovery matters, and why some games are managed cautiously. A team is not only trying to win one match. It is trying to survive a month of repeated high effort.
When you watch, keep one practical idea in mind. The tournament has two different types of pressure. In the group stage, teams manage risk over multiple matches. In the knockout rounds, one bad day can end the run.
The first stage is a group. A group is a mini league where four teams play each other once. In 2026 there are 12 groups of four. Teams earn points to build a table and try to finish high enough to advance.
After groups, the tournament becomes a knockout. A knockout stage is single elimination. If you lose, you go home. In 2026, advancing teams enter a round of 32, which is the first knockout round with 32 teams.
See how teams move from groups into the knockout bracket, including how some third placed teams can still qualify.
The key takeaway is simple. You are often watching two games at once. The match on the pitch, and the qualification math happening across the group.
A group table is ranked by points. A win gives 3 points, a draw gives 1 point, and a loss gives 0 points. When teams finish level on points, tie breakers decide the order.
Tie breakers use performance details to separate teams, such as head to head results, goal difference which is goals scored minus goals conceded, and goals scored. Some tournaments also use disciplinary records, meaning fewer cards is better.
Watch how different tie breaker rules can flip a table when two teams are tied.
