Usability First: Principles That Matter
You have seen it happen: a screen looks fine, but users hesitate. They hover, scroll, and click the same button twice because nothing seems to change. They open a menu, back out, try a different path, then quit. This course starts by treating those moments as signals. When you can explain why the hesitation happened, you can change the interface in a way that removes it.
Usability is the common yardstick
User experience (UX) is how the product feels while someone tries to reach a goal: can they find things, understand them, and recover when they go wrong? User interface (UI) is the visual and interactive layer: layout, typography, components, states. Product design connects the experience to the product’s outcomes: what to build, for whom, and how it fits the business.
These roles produce different outputs, but you judge them with the same question: did the interface help the user complete a task with clarity and confidence? A UI change that looks nicer but adds decision points hurts usability. A UX flow that “works” on paper but hides feedback still creates double clicks and support tickets.
To make those principles concrete, it helps to see them on a single screen.

Turn business goals into user goals
A business goal like “increase activation” becomes usable when you translate it into a user goal like “finish setup in two minutes without guessing.” Design thinking stages give you a practical path for that translation: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test. The stage that keeps you honest is define, because it forces a crisp problem statement.
A good problem statement names the user, their context, and the barrier you can remove. Example: “First time admins need to invite teammates during onboarding, but they do not notice the invite step because it looks optional and gives no progress feedback.” Now you can evaluate ideas by usability outcomes: clearer hierarchy for the step, immediate feedback after an invite, and constraints that prevent skipping required fields.
Rule of thumb
If you cannot describe the user’s next action after a screen loads, the design is not yet testable.
