“Independent customer-facing delivery” is not “you can do everything alone.” It means you can run a bounded piece of customer work end to end, with the right people pulled in at the right time, and without your manager having to drive the day to day.
Use one running definition for the first 90 days. By day 90, a forward deployed engineer (FDE) should be able to take a small, real customer problem from first call to a clean handoff, while staying inside scope, security rules, and the team’s delivery habits.
Three things define independence for an FDE. First is scope, meaning the exact problem you agreed to solve and the “not included” edges you will not take on. Second is autonomy, meaning you make the plan, keep it moving, and make tradeoffs in the open. Third is constraints, meaning you deliver inside limits like security review, data access rules, product capabilities, and the customer’s change window.
Consider this situation. You are assigned to Acme Bank, and they want a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) proof of concept. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is an approach where the AI system looks up relevant documents at answer time and uses them as input, instead of relying only on what it learned during training. Independence here means you can run discovery, pick a narrow slice of documents, set success checks, and coordinate with security and product, without asking your manager to tell you what to do next.

Independence Means Owning The Next Step
When a meeting ends, you should already know the next decision, the owner, and the deadline, and you should be the one who writes it down and follows up.
A good 30 60 90 plan builds toward owning a workstream, not “learning everything.” A workstream is one track of work with a clear goal, like “Acme RAG POC for policy search,” with its own plan, risks, and deliverables.
Imagine the same Acme Bank engagement. You want to ramp from internal readiness, to shared delivery, to owning that workstream while still escalating the right risks.
