A five-step writing process loop.
Do you find this helpful?
The bell has already gone. You have a fresh sheet of paper, a timer counting down, and a room full of eyes waiting for something that sounds like it was always going to exist. Your mind does the predictable thing: it reaches for a perfect first sentence and finds nothing. The blank page starts to feel like a test instead of a workspace. This workshop begins there on purpose, because most writing problems show up under pressure: limited time, limited confidence, and the sense that you have to perform.
A useful toolkit gives you moves you can repeat when the page stays blank.
When people say “talent,” they often mean writing that seems to appear without effort. In practice, writing improves through a loop you can run on purpose, even when you feel unready. A loop is a short cycle where each pass teaches you something you can use on the next pass.
Rule of thumb
If you only draft, you practice starting. If you run the whole loop, you practice finishing.

A five-step writing process loop.
The point of the loop is reliability. It gives you a way to write on days when inspiration behaves like a rumor.
Stories feel big, but you can build them from a few choices you control on the page. In this workshop, you will practice four story levers. A story lever is a part of a scene you can adjust and immediately see the effect.
Character is the person we follow closely enough to care what happens next.
Desire is what that character wants right now, in this moment.
Obstacle is what makes getting it harder than it looked.
Change is how the character ends the scene differently than they began it.
These levers matter because they create movement. Character gives the reader someone to track. Desire gives direction. Obstacle creates pressure. Change creates meaning, even in a small scene.
When you get stuck, you do not need a new idea. You usually need to pull one lever harder.
Beginners often try to write the whole movie. You will get better faster by writing one scene that implies a bigger story, then stopping. A scene is a short stretch of time where something shifts. Pick one moment where the desire is clear and the obstacle can show up quickly: a knock at the door, a grading conference, a text message that changes plans.
End the scene as soon as change happens. The reader should feel there is more, but you do not have to write it yet.
