The PSAT is a 2 hour 14 minute digital test with two sections, Reading and Writing and Math. Each section is split into two separately timed modules, and your performance in module 1 helps determine the difficulty of module 2. That adaptive setup rewards accuracy early, but you still need pacing habits that keep you moving without rushing. If practice tests feel random or you keep missing by a few questions, the fix is usually the same. How the digital PSAT is organized

The digital PSAT has two sections.

  • Reading and Writing has 64 minutes total and 54 questions.
  • Math has 70 minutes total and 44 questions.

Each section comes as two equal length modules. You finish module 1 before you can see module 2, and the modules are timed separately. That means you cannot borrow time from a strong module to rescue a weak one. It also means you should treat every module like its own short test with its own pacing target.

Reading and Writing question families and fastest approaches

Reading and Writing questions are short, but they repeat a small set of skills. If you can name the family, you can pick a method before you even read the choices.

Craft and structure

These questions ask how the text works.

For vocabulary in context, do not pick the word you like. Pick the word that matches the local meaning and tone in that specific sentence. Cover the options and paraphrase the sentence first, then look for the match.

For purpose, function, and rhetorical technique, focus on what the underlined part does. Does it define, contrast, concede, give an example, or shift the argument.

Information and ideas

These questions are about what is supported by the passage or data.

For main idea and inference, stay literal. A correct inference is forced by the text, not just reasonable. For evidence pair questions, solve the first question in your own words, then use the line reference to prove it.

Standard English conventions

These are the rules questions.

Read the sentence once for meaning, then check the grammar decision. The most common traps are unnecessary commas, mismatched verb tense, and pronoun ambiguity. When two answers look similar, the shorter one is often better because it avoids adding extra errors.

Compare the main families and the typical traps.

A practical self check for this section is whether you can explain why three options are wrong. If you can only explain why one looks right, you are guessing, and your review should focus on the rule or clue you missed.

Math question families and when to use Desmos

Math questions fall into a few buckets, and each bucket has a default tool.

Algebra and linear relationships

Think slope, intercept, and solving systems. If you see two linear equations, graphing in Desmos can quickly show the intersection point, but only if you entered the equations correctly.

Advanced math

This includes quadratics, exponentials, and functions. Many problems are about form. Standard form, factored form, and vertex form each make different features easy to see. If the question asks for intercepts, factored form is usually fastest. If it asks for a maximum or minimum, vertex form is usually fastest.

Problem solving and data

These questions test ratios, percentages, units, and interpreting tables or graphs. The trap is arithmetic drift. Write one clear equation with units, then compute.

Geometry and trigonometry

You get a reference sheet, but you still must choose the right relationship. Sketching a quick diagram often saves more time than hunting for a formula.

Use Desmos when it replaces algebra, not when it adds steps. If you can solve in one or two clean lines, do it by hand. If you would otherwise expand, factor, and check, graphing is often the better trade.

Rework routine that stays honest.

Turning explanations into drills is the final step. Take the concept you missed and do three more questions of the same type over two days. If you only reread the solution, you are training recognition, not execution.
