A taste of chapter 1
Chapter 1
Marie-Laure’s fingers move over a small roofline, then down to a narrow street that fits beneath her palm. Her father, Daniel LeBlanc, steadies her hands and shifts them a few centimeters, patient as a clock. Marie-Laure is blind, and in their Paris apartment that fact shapes everything, from how she crosses a room to how she leaves the building. Daniel does not carry her. He makes her practice. He places her at the start of the route, lets her feel the turn she will need to make, then asks her to find it again from memory. Nearby sit the tools of her new reading, a Braille slate and paper, waiting like another kind of map.
The miniature neighborhood is not a toy.
