A taste of chapter 1
Chapter 1
The first glimpse of the island comes out of gray water. A boat noses toward rock and a strip of shore, and above it sits a large house that looks too new, too deliberate, for the rough place it is built on. The passengers keep their coats close and their bags near their feet. They are strangers to one another, yet they share the same destination, and none of them can reach it without this one small crossing.
Each of them has a reason that sounds tidy. An invitation for a holiday. A job offer. A social visit that promises comfort and good company. They have traveled separately to the coast, then been funneled to the same boat as if the island is a private room that only opens when everyone is inside.
