About this book
When your biggest mistakes keep repeating, instinct is not enough to keep you from making them again. This book argues that you need explicit principles to face reality, think clearly, and turn hard experience into better choices.
What you'll learn
- Identify recurring problems by moving from goals to diagnosis before you jump to solutions.
- Apply the 5-step process to break down decisions, test assumptions, and adjust when reality pushes back.
- Build a culture where the best ideas win by using radical truth, radical transparency, and believability to settle disagreements.
A taste of chapter 1
Chapter 1
You make a call under uncertainty, and it goes well enough that you move on. A month later, a similar situation shows up, and you cannot clearly explain what you were thinking the first time. You remember the outcome, but not the criteria. Under time pressure, you reach for the same instincts, and you repeat the same mistake or you get lucky again without knowing why.
Dalio’s move is to treat that gap as the real failure. Do not rely on I will remember next time. Write down what you decided, why you decided it, and what happened later, so the decision rule survives mood, time pressure, and memory drift.
A principle is a decision rule you can point to.
