About this book
Olive Smith kisses the last person she should in Stanford’s biology corridor just to convince her best friend she has moved on. The lie lands her in a fake relationship with a feared professor, and every public appearance makes it harder to tell where the performance ends.
What you'll learn
- Identify how a fake relationship changes the social rules around a workplace, so the public story looks real.
- Track how academic power dynamics shape every private decision, so attraction never sits outside the professional stakes.
- Recognize when a performance has turned into attachment, so the next honest conversation happens before the lie hardens into habit.
A taste of chapter 1
Chapter 1
Olive’s eyes will not cooperate. In a Stanford bathroom during an interview visit, she is half-blind from a contact lens problem, squinting at the mirror while she fumbles with her case and solution. She tries to fix it fast, because she is supposed to look like someone who belongs here.
Then she notices she is not alone. An unnamed man is in the same bathroom, close enough that the space feels suddenly too small. Olive is caught mid-mess, irritated and embarrassed, and she cannot even see well enough to read his expression. The moment is awkward in the plain way of two strangers sharing a place that is meant to be private, and Olive has to decide whether to push through the discomfort or retreat.
