A taste of chapter 1
Chapter 1
Late in his neurosurgery residency at Stanford, Paul Kalanithi keeps trying to work through symptoms that do not fit the life he is living. Back pain and weight loss stop being things to push past and start being reasons to get checked, so he moves from ward routines into tests and waiting rooms, following the same clinical steps he has sent other people through.
In the viewing room, the usual distance is gone.
When the CT scan comes up, he reads it with the reflexes of a surgeon, and what he sees lands before anyone has to explain it. His lungs are described as filled with tumors. The medical label follows. Stage IV lung cancer. Language that once helped him stay calm and useful now points directly at him, and there is no professional role to hide inside.
