Art history starts with the problem of how periods, styles, media, and patronage turn a vast visual record into the story of movements. This course gives you a grounded introduction to major eras, artists, and cultural settings, so you can recognize what changes across time and why those changes matter. By the end, you will be able to place major works within their religious, political, and institutional contexts and make sense of the broad arc from ancient art to the present.
The course covers how art history is organized, from simplified timelines to the roles of media and patronage. It then moves through Ancient, Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, modern, and contemporary art, including perspective, anatomy, composition, light, abstraction, conceptual art, installation, identity politics, and digital work.
