Spotify starts as a simple playback problem, but real traffic quickly exposes limits in latency, throughput, availability, and storage. This course builds the core judgment needed to reason about a music streaming platform at a high level, from the first bottlenecks to the architecture choices that keep playback working under load and failure. It is aimed at beginners who want a short, practical system design pass on a familiar product, with an eye toward interview-style tradeoff discussion.
The course covers a minimal Spotify playback path, CDN delivery, and the tradeoffs between origin fetches and cached audio. It also examines metadata storage choices, read scaling with replication and sharding, and resilience techniques such as timeouts, fallbacks, and graceful degradation, ending with a defensible high-level design.
