A taste of chapter 1
Chapter 1
Mr. Jones runs Manor Farm, and the pattern is always the same. The animals work from morning to night, and the results leave the farmyard. Milk is taken. Eggs are collected. Work animals are pushed until their bodies give out. When the day’s work is done, they go back to stalls and pens with hunger still in them, because food is measured out to keep them useful, not comfortable. Different animals suffer in different ways, but the neglect is shared enough that none of them mistakes it for bad luck.
That is why, when word goes around that Old Major wants everyone in the big barn after Mr. Jones has gone to bed, they come. They do not come for entertainment.
