A taste of chapter 1
Chapter 1
Montag steps out with the other firemen into the night, and the job feels practiced, official. The fire truck is there like any work vehicle. His uniform marks him as law. When the house is chosen, they do not carry water. They bring the tool that throws fire, and they turn a home into a punishment. Books are the reason. In this city, books are contraband, and a fireman’s pride comes from finding them and burning them along with the place that hides them. Montag moves as if he has done it countless times, because he has, and the crew treats the blaze as a clean solution, not a tragedy.
After the flames, the world Montag walks through is already loud again.
