A taste of chapter 1
Chapter 1
Alicia Berenson’s husband, Gabriel, is found shot. The police story lands fast and clean. Alicia pulled the trigger. After that, the part that should be simplest becomes the part no one can move past. Alicia does not explain herself. She does not argue. She does not confess. She stops speaking completely, and she never starts again.
Outside her London home, the scene hardens into a kind of public theater. Lights flash against wet pavement. Cameras gather where neighbors stand back. People crane for any sign of the woman inside, but Alicia stays out of reach, present only as a name and a sealed house.
A famous artist who shoots her husband would already be enough to feed headlines. Alicia’s silence turns it into something else.
