About this book
Lowen Ashleigh takes a ghostwriting job that pulls her into the Crawford house, where Verity’s unfinished manuscript starts pointing at a version of the family no one wants to believe. As Lowen grows closer to Jeremy, every page makes the next lie harder to keep buried.
What you'll learn
- Track how an embedded manuscript can shift a thriller from suspense to doubt by making every scene compete with a second narrative.
- Recognize how secrecy, attraction, and professional dependency can turn a job into a moral trap.
- Compare two conflicting accounts of the same family crisis without assuming the last document automatically settles the truth.
A taste of chapter 1
Chapter 1
Lowen stands on a New York City sidewalk with her body still catching up to what her eyes just saw. An accident has torn through the ordinary noise of the street, sudden and violent, and the aftermath is messy enough to make people turn away even as they keep staring. Sirens and shouting layer over each other. Lowen feels pinned in place, then unsteady, like her mind is trying to step back from the scene while her feet stay where they are.
The street keeps moving around her anyway. Strangers cluster at a distance. Someone has called for help. Lowen’s breath comes shallow, and she focuses on small, concrete things, the shine of wet pavement, the bright flicker of emergency lights, anything that is not the worst part of what just happened.
