A taste of chapter 1
Chapter 1
Ma steps out of the marsh shack in 1952 and starts down the sandy path, moving away from the water channels and tall grasses without looking back. Kya stays near the doorway, small enough that the grown-ups’ choices feel like weather, something that happens to her. The house is quiet in a new way. When evening comes and Ma still has not returned, Kya waits for footsteps that never reach the porch.
The next days teach her the rule she never asked to learn. People can leave, and the marsh does not call them back.
After Ma is gone, Kya’s brothers and sisters leave one by one. Each departure makes the shack emptier and the marsh wider.
